Training on modern flood early warning system held in Quetta under BRAVE project

A one‑day training program on Flood Sensitivity Analysis (FSA) and Early Warning Systems (EWS) was organized under the BRAVE project with the support of UK International Development and IOM‑Pakistan. The initiative aimed to strengthen institutional coordination and enhance technical capacity to effectively manage flood risks in Balochistan.

The session was attended by Director General PDMA Naveed Ahmed Sheikh, IOM Climate Coordinator Alon, PMD Director Mukhtar Ahmed Mugsi, WFP Program Associate Asad Ali, Policy Officer Mazhar Baloch, PPO (Monitoring & Evaluation) Naseebullah Khan, ADC Revenue Jameelullah, Deputy Director Social Welfare Hafizullah Khosa, along with officials from PDMA, PMD, IFRAP, and District Disaster Management Authorities (DDMAs).

The training focused on modern risk assessment, flood hazard mapping, and strengthening early warning systems. Participants received practical guidance on flood sensitivity analysis, hazard mapping, data management, timely issuance of alerts during emergencies, installation of Automatic Weather Stations (AWS) and rain gauges, data collection, and inter‑agency information sharing.

In the second phase, technical teams were briefed on FSA data, digital mapping, EWS alert thresholds, potential flood spread, and standard operating procedures (SOPs). Practical exercises on simulated flood scenarios were also conducted.

At the conclusion of the program, participants agreed to strengthen timely data updates, issuance of alerts, and institutional coordination. It was also decided to use the DDMA portal as a central platform for daily monitoring of flood risks and weather conditions.

Officials emphasized that the training represents a significant step toward modernizing disaster preparedness in Balochistan, ensuring that communities at risk are better protected through advanced early warning mechanisms and coordinated institutional response.
