Jinnah Peoples Metro Train: A New Chapter in Balochistan’s Public Transport

The inauguration of the Jinnah Peoples Metro Train Service in Quetta marks an important development in Balochistan’s public transport system. The launch of the province’s first metro train service represents not only an expansion of transport facilities but also an effort to provide safer, affordable and more convenient mobility to ordinary citizens.

Chief Minister Balochistan Mir Sarfraz Bugti, along with Federal Minister for Railways Hanif Abbasi, formally inaugurated the service in Quetta on Tuesday. The ceremony was attended by provincial ministers, members of the provincial and National Assembly, Chairman Pakistan Railways, Chief Secretary Balochistan Shakeel Qadir Khan and senior officials. The Chief Minister and the Federal Minister also participated in the inaugural trial journey of the train.

Addressing the ceremony, Chief Minister Sarfraz Bugti said the service was designed to benefit the common people, particularly workers, students, low-income families and professionals who depend on affordable public transport for their daily travel. He announced that senior citizens and persons with disabilities would be provided free travel on the metro train, while fares for other passengers would remain subsidized and affordable.

The project is also significant because of the decision to rely on Pakistan Railways for the provision of locomotives and coaches. The Chief Minister said an earlier proposal involved importing engines and coaches from China, which could have required an investment of around Rs50 to Rs60 billion and taken three to four years. Instead, the decision to have new coaches and engines prepared through Pakistan Railways helped avoid sending substantial public funds abroad while utilizing the capacity of a national institution.

The government has also set its sights on expanding the service. According to the Chief Minister, the metro train operation will be expanded to two trains so that services can operate in both directions. Work on the development of the railway track towards Bostan Industrial Estate has already commenced, while the longer-term plan envisages extending the service towards Pishin, Bostan and Mastung.

For a province as geographically vast as Balochistan, improved connectivity can have significance beyond daily commuting. Reliable and affordable transport can make access to educational institutions, workplaces, markets and other essential services easier, particularly for people who cannot afford private transportation.

The launch also demonstrates the value of coordination between the federal and provincial governments and relevant institutions. Pakistan Railways, the provincial administration, transport authorities and security institutions worked together to make the service operational.

The Jinnah Peoples Metro Train should therefore be viewed as more than a new transport facility for Quetta. It is an investment in urban mobility and public convenience, with the potential to become a broader regional connectivity initiative as the planned extensions are completed.

For the people of Balochistan, particularly those who depend on public transport every day, the real measure of the project will be its reliability, affordability, safety and accessibility. If these objectives are sustained, the service can become a meaningful addition to the province’s public transport infrastructure and an important step towards improving everyday urban life.
