Governor Mandokhail calls for comprehensive disaster risk reduction strategy in Balochistan

QUETTA, Governor Balochistan Jaffar Khan Mandokhail, in his message on the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction, emphasized the need for a comprehensive and long-term strategy to effectively address the challenges posed by natural disasters and climate change in the province.

He said Balochistan frequently faces earthquakes, floods, droughts and other natural calamities, with one disaster often emerging soon after another. These recurring events pose serious threats to human lives, critical infrastructure, agriculture, livestock and the economic resources of local communities.

The governor stressed that funds allocated for disaster management must be utilized transparently and efficiently, while the performance of relevant initiatives should be measurable and their benefits must reach the public.

Mandokhail noted that all concerned institutions should attach equal importance to preventive measures before disasters, timely relief operations during emergencies and rehabilitation efforts in affected areas after calamities.

He observed that despite significant advances in science and technology, it remains impossible to completely prevent natural disasters. However, he said, modern scientific research, weather forecasting, prudent planning and the effective use of advanced technology can substantially reduce their impact and associated losses.

The governor underlined the need to make disaster preparedness an integral part of government planning rather than treating natural disasters solely as emergency situations. He said proactive measures are essential for minimizing risks and improving resilience.

Referring to the alarming decline in groundwater levels and the persistent challenge of drought in Balochistan, Mandokhail called for rainwater harvesting, construction of small dams, sustainable management of groundwater resources and expansion of afforestation campaigns.

He further emphasized strengthening coordination among provincial and district-level institutions and enhancing the capacity of rescue and emergency response agencies to ensure an effective response to disasters.

The governor said that through cooperation among federal and provincial governments, relevant institutions, environmental experts and local communities, a comprehensive system could be developed to make Balochistan more resilient to natural disasters and better prepared to face future challenges.
