Balochistan government fully prepared to hold upcoming Local Body Elections: CM Sarfraz Bugti
Pledged to further strengthen municipal system and ensure transparent electoral processes
Quetta, Chief Minister Balochistan Mir Sarfraz Bugti has reaffirmed that the provincial government is fully prepared to hold the upcoming local body elections without delay, pledging to further strengthen the municipal system and ensure transparent electoral processes.
Speaking at the Provincial Disaster Management Authority office during a ceremony organized under the Municipal Services Initiative 2026, the Chief Minister highlighted the government’s commitment to modernizing municipal services. He said that in the first phase, all municipal committees across the province are being equipped with modern machinery and essential equipment, while in the second phase these facilities will be extended to union councils, small towns, and rural areas.
Sarfraz Bugti noted that Balochistan remains the only province where local government elections have already been held, with the current tenure of municipal bodies set to conclude in February 2027. He assured that fresh elections will be conducted immediately thereafter, with no excuses or delays. “Our focus is on empowering local governments to deliver better municipal services, improve sanitation systems, and enhance governance standards,” he said.
The Chief Minister announced the provision of 15 sewerage suction trucks, 87 sanitation rickshaws, over 350 garbage containers, 500 handcarts, and more than 700 dustbins to municipal committees. He emphasized that smaller equipment such as handcarts and rickshaws are particularly vital for narrow streets where larger trucks cannot operate.
Sarfraz Bugti also drew attention to the sanitation challenges in Chaman, recounting how heaps of garbage up to 13 feet high were recently cleared following a special campaign initiated by the local administration. He urged citizens to actively participate in maintaining cleanliness, stressing that government machinery alone cannot ensure sustainable sanitation without public cooperation.
The Chief Minister further announced the introduction of mobile applications to facilitate direct public complaints to the CM Secretariat, ensuring accountability of municipal staff. He also reiterated the government’s decision to impose a complete ban on polythene bags across Balochistan after a four‑month awareness campaign.
Highlighting broader development efforts, Bugti mentioned the activation of schools and health centers, as well as the launch of the Quetta Metro Rail Service. He dismissed criticism over minor technical issues in the metro project, urging constructive feedback instead of negative commentary.
The Chief Minister praised the efforts of Local Government Advisor Nawabzada Amir Hamza Zehri, Chief Secretary Shakeel Qadir Khan, and other officials, expressing hope that municipal institutions will continue to serve the people with dedication and efficiency.
