Balochistan Food Authority intensifies crackdown on unsafe and adulterated food

The Balochistan Food Authority (BFA) has intensified its province‑wide campaign against hazardous, substandard, and adulterated food, conducting detailed inspections in Quetta, Harnai, Dera Allah Yar, and Hub.

According to officials, a total of 21 food outlets were fined, 29 operators were issued corrective notices, while two food production units were sealed. Additionally, one unit’s food business license and packaging machine were confiscated.

In Quetta, inspections were carried out at bakeries, grocery and general stores, restaurants, sweet and kulfi manufacturing units, water purification plants, beef shops, ice factories, and pickle shops located on Spini Road, Airport Road, Nawan Killi, Ghousabad, Sariab Road, Millennium Mall, Chohar Mill Street, Machine Road, and Western Bypass. A snack manufacturing unit was sealed for using non‑food grade coloring, producing unregistered products, misleading labeling, poor hygiene, and unhygienic staff conditions. A water purification plant was also sealed for multiple violations of the BFA Act 2014, including poor sanitation and failure to meet legal requirements. In another case, a kulfi unit’s license and packaging machine were seized due to unregistered products, poor hygiene, and food safety violations.

Other centers faced penalties for unhygienic conditions, lack of worker cleanliness, use of contaminated machinery, dirty water tanks, poor drainage, absence of water testing reports, and sale of expired spices, chocolates, sauces, edible oils, and other food items. Businesses operating without licenses and improper storage practices were also fined.

Milk quality checks on Sabzal Road revealed adulteration with water. Three milk vendors were fined, and 10 liters of adulterated milk were destroyed, while four shops received corrective notices for minor deficiencies.

In Harnai, inspections along Quetta Road led to fines for eight outlets and corrective notices for five others. Expired tea, spices, biscuits, ketchup, cakes, chips, and sweets were recovered, while some shops were found storing fertilizer alongside food items — prompting legal action.

In Hub, inspections of water purification plants and food outlets along the main highway resulted in fines for two plants and corrective notices for six operators due to sanitation and SOP violations. In Dera Allah Yar, inspections were also conducted to ensure compliance with food safety laws.

Officials reiterated that the campaign against adulterated and unsafe food will continue across the province to safeguard public health.
