Quetta District Division: Local Government System under review
Stresses need for amendments to ensure effective governance in the newly notified districts
Quetta, Secretary Local Government and Rural Development Balochistan Abdul Rauf Baloch in a meeting reviewed the implications of dividing Quetta into two districts and to align the local government system with the new administrative structure.
The meeting was attended by Administrator Metropolitan Corporation Quetta Basheer Barech, Secretary Local Councils Balochistan Abdul Waheed Badini, focal person of the Local Government Department Taha Junaid, representatives of the Election Commission, and senior officials from relevant departments.
Discussions focused on necessary legal and administrative amendments following the division of Quetta, including the establishment of local councils, reorganization of Town Municipal Committees (TMCs), and re-demarcation of urban union councils. The participants also examined whether changes were required in census-related charges, circles, and CBCs, and considered proposals for their redistribution under the new district framework.
The committee reviewed the Balochistan Local Government Act 2010, noting the need for amendments to ensure effective governance in the newly notified districts. The boundaries of Quetta’s four TMCs and their union councils were also assessed, with emphasis on revising limits in line with the administrative division.
Secretary Abdul Rauf Baloch stressed that reorganizing local government institutions according to the new administrative requirements was essential. He directed officials to carefully examine all legal, administrative, and boundary-related matters and prepare actionable recommendations. He highlighted that local governments play a vital role in delivering basic services and establishing effective governance at the grassroots level, making it imperative to finalize council structures and boundaries under a clear legal framework.
The meeting underscored the importance of inter-departmental coordination and consultation to avoid administrative or legal complications in future local government arrangements. At the conclusion, officials were instructed to prepare detailed recommendations for reforms and adjustments.
The formal notification of Quetta’s division into two districts was issued in July 2026, making the restructuring of the local government system a priority for provincial authorities.
